Marketing to Sustainability Leaders in Manufacturing

Understanding Their Role

Manufacturing sustainability efforts focus on reducing environmental impacts, conserving energy and natural resources, as well as improving the health and safety of local communities. Large manufactures have embraced sustainability due to the combined benefits of cost savings, improved images, meeting customer expectations and strengthened relationships with all stakeholders.1 All large US manufacturers now publish sustainability reports and many link executive compensation to sustainability initiatives.2 Common areas of focus include3 4:


  • Energy reduction in production facilities
  • Reduced greenhouse emissions
  • Waste reduction
  • Minimizing or eliminating the use of hazardous materials
  • Safety programs
  • Supply chain compliance audits


Sustainability initiatives in manufacturing organizations generally include assessing areas if impact, policies, training, auditing and measurements. Manufacturers have established “whistleblower” channels to allow all stakeholders to report compliance concerns, which drive investigative cases.5
